YM and MYM Tick Value: E-mini Dow and Micro Dow Futures

One tick on E-mini Dow futures (YM) is 1 index point and is worth $5.00 per contract. One tick on Micro E-mini Dow futures (MYM) is also 1 index point and is worth $0.50. On the Dow, a tick and a point are the same thing, so YM is $5 per point and MYM is $0.50 per point.

Key points:

  • YM tick value: $5.00 per 1.0 index point.
  • MYM tick value: $0.50 per 1.0 index point.
  • Size ratio: MYM is one tenth of YM, so 10 MYM move the same dollars per point as 1 YM.
  • Hours: CME Globex, Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. ET, with a daily break from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET.
  • Settlement: both are financially settled; trading ends at 9:30 a.m. ET on the third Friday of the contract month.

For every other contract in one place, see our futures tick value chart.

YM and MYM Contract Specifications

Comparison of YM and MYM futures: YM is $5 times the Dow with a 1-point tick worth $5, MYM is $0.50 times the Dow with a 1-point tick worth $0.50, so a 100-point move is $500 on YM and $50 on MYM.

YM and MYM share the same 1-point tick; only the dollar value differs.

Tick vs Point on Dow Futures

On YM and MYM, one tick equals one point. The Dow contracts move in whole index points, so there is no fraction of a point to count.

That is different from the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 contracts. ES, MES, NQ and MNQ move in 0.25-point ticks, so one point on those contracts is four ticks. If you move from ES to YM, a "10-tick stop" means 2.5 points on ES but 10 full points on YM.

Contract Tick size Ticks per point Tick value Point value
YM 1.0 point 1 $5.00 $5
MYM 1.0 point 1 $0.50 $0.50
ES 0.25 point 4 $12.50 $50
NQ 0.25 point 4 $5.00 $20

How to Calculate YM and MYM Tick Value

Tick value is the contract multiplier times the tick size. For the Dow contracts the tick size is 1.0, so the tick value is simply the multiplier.

Tick value = contract multiplier x minimum tick
YM: $5 x 1.0 = $5.00
MYM: $0.50 x 1.0 = $0.50

Profit or loss on a trade is the number of points moved, times the point value, times the number of contracts. Fees and commissions come on top and depend on your broker.

P&L = points moved x point value x contracts

P&L Examples: a 100-Point Move

A 100-point move in the Dow is worth $500 on one YM contract and $50 on one MYM contract. The table runs the same math for a few common sizes.

Move 1 YM 1 MYM 10 MYM
1 point (1 tick) $5 $0.50 $5
25 points $125 $12.50 $125
100 points $500 $50 $500
250 points $1,250 $125 $1,250

The same math works for risk. A 40-point stop costs $200 on 1 YM and $20 on 1 MYM. If you want to risk $100 on a trade, that is 20 points on 1 YM or 200 points on 1 MYM.

Notional value follows the same multiplier. At an example Dow level of 50,000 (an illustration, not a quote), one YM controls $250,000 of the index and one MYM controls $25,000.

YM vs MYM: Which One to Trade

YM and MYM track the same index with the same tick size; MYM is just one tenth the size. The choice comes down to how many dollars you want each point to be worth.

Feature YM MYM
Dollars per point $5 $0.50
Size vs YM 1x 1/10
Smallest step in risk $5 per contract $0.50 per contract
Scaling Whole $5 steps 10 MYM = 1 YM per point

MYM suits smaller accounts and traders who want to scale in and out in small steps. It is also common in prop firm evaluations, where a fixed drawdown limit leaves little room per trade. YM suits traders who already size in larger dollar amounts and want one contract instead of ten.

Margin is separate from tick value. It is set by the exchange and your broker and can change, so check your broker before you trade. Our page on micro futures tick values lists the other micro contracts next to MYM.

How YM and MYM Compare With ES and NQ per Point

Per point, YM is far smaller than the other two big US index contracts: $5 against $50 for ES and $20 for NQ. MYM, at $0.50 a point, is smaller again than MES ($5) and MNQ ($2).

Index Full-size contract Point value Micro contract Point value
Dow Jones Industrial Average YM $5 MYM $0.50
S&P 500 ES $50 MES $5
Nasdaq-100 NQ $20 MNQ $2

A point is not the same size of move on each index. The Dow trades at a much higher index level than the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100, so it covers many more points in a normal day. Compare contracts by the dollar risk of a typical trade, not by point value alone.

For the S&P 500 version, see the ES tick value guide. The Nasdaq-100 micro is covered in the MNQ tick value guide.
