How the calculation works. Ticks x tick value x contracts.

Every futures contract moves in ticks, its smallest price step. The exchange sets what one tick is worth on one contract, so P&L is the ticks moved, times the tick value, times the number of contracts.

The formula

P&L = ticks moved x tick value x contracts

  • Ticks moved = price move ÷ tick size.
  • Point value = tick value ÷ tick size: what a 1.00 move is worth.
  • The round-turn fee (entry and exit together) comes off once per contract.

Example 1: ES long

  1. Buy 2 ES at 4,000.00 and sell at 4,004.00.
  2. The move is 4 points, or 16 ticks of 0.25. Each tick is worth $12.50.
  3. 16 x $12.50 x 2 contracts.

Result$400

Example 2: MNQ short

  1. Sell 3 MNQ at 20,000.00 and buy back at 19,975.00.
  2. The price falls 25 points, or 100 ticks of 0.25, in your favor. Each tick is worth $0.50.
  3. 100 x $0.50 x 3 contracts.

Result$150

Micro vs standard contracts

A micro trades the same market at a fraction of the size, often a tenth. MES moves in the same 0.25-point ticks as ES, but each tick is worth $1.25 instead of $12.50. Micros let you size a position in smaller steps and risk less per tick. The Standard and Micro switch beside the contract keeps your prices when you change size.

ES, 4 points on 1 contract
$200.00
MES, 4 points on 1 contract
$20.00
CL, a $0.50 move on 1 contract
$500.00
MCL, a $0.50 move on 1 contract
$50.00

Contract specs come from CME Group’s rulebook and contract pages, checked on 9 October 2026. The exchange can change them, so check the contract’s CME Group page before you trade.

Futures calculator FAQ.

Multiply the ticks the price moved in your favor by the contract's tick value and by the number of contracts, then subtract fees. On ES a tick is 0.25 points and is worth $12.50, so a 4-point move on 2 contracts is 16 x $12.50 x 2 = $400.

ES moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $12.50. NQ moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $5.00. CL moves in $0.01 ticks worth $10.00. Their micros are worth $1.25 (MES), $0.50 (MNQ) and $1.00 (MCL) a tick.

A tick is the smallest step a contract's price can move. A point is a move of 1.00 in the price. ES has four ticks to the point, so one point is worth $50.00. CL moves in $0.01 ticks, so a 1.00 move is 100 ticks, or $1,000.00.

Only the fee you enter. Type your round-turn cost per contract, with commission, exchange and clearing fees, and the calculator subtracts it once for each contract. With the fee at $0.00, every result is before fees.

Enter them as decimals. 110-16 means 110 and 16/32, which is 110.50. ZN moves in half of a 32nd, so one tick is 0.015625 and is worth $15.625.
