You can connect to a Linux-based VPS using SSH (Secure Shell), which provides secure command-line access to your server without the need for a graphical interface.
Prefer to watch? Our 1-minute video shows the whole connection, from the dashboard to the root@ prompt: watch "How to connect to your Linux VPS".

Windows Option 1: Using Command Prompt or PowerShell
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell
Run the following command (replace with your server's IP address):
ssh root@your.server.ip.address- If this is the first time you're connecting to this server, you'll see a message saying the authenticity of the host can't be established, asking if you want to continue connecting. This is expected: type yes and press Enter to continue.
- When prompted, enter your password
Not working? Even if your QuantVPS dashboard displays the default username as Administrator, that applies only to Windows-based servers. For Ubuntu/Linux servers, your SSH username is: "root"
Windows Option 2: Using PuTTY (Graphical Interface)
- Download and install PuTTY
- Open PuTTY and enter your server IP in the "Host Name" field
- Set Port to 22 and connection type to SSH
- Click Open
- When prompted, login as: root
- Enter your password
On macOS or Linux:
- Open Terminal
Run the following command:
ssh root@your.server.ip.address- If it's your first time connecting, you may see the same host authenticity prompt described above: type yes to continue.
- Type your password when prompted
Recommended: Use SSH Key Authentication
Instead of logging in with the root password, we recommend setting up SSH key authentication where possible. SSH keys are significantly more secure than passwords; they're effectively immune to brute-force login attempts, since there's no password for an attacker to guess.
